Police Detain 65-Year-Old Man Over Alleged Rape, Impregnating Granddaughter

A 65-year-old man, Musa Gado, has been taken into police custody in Niger State over allegations that he impregnated his 16-year-old granddaughter, authorities have confirmed.

The Director General of the Niger State Child Rights Agency, Kaltume Mohammed, disclosed the development to journalists in Minna on Wednesday, stating that a DNA test established the suspect as the biological father of the teenager’s baby.

According to her, the paternity test showed a 99.9999 per cent match, confirming the grandfather’s link to the four-month-old child delivered by the victim in December 2025.

Mohammed said the case was first reported in October 2025 by the victim’s father, Lawal Nababa, who alleged repeated sexual abuse of his daughter by her maternal grandfather. At the time, the girl was already six months pregnant and was subsequently placed under the agency’s care until she gave birth.

She added that the suspect allegedly made unsuccessful attempts to terminate the pregnancy, but has denied responsibility, prompting the agency to pursue a DNA test conducted outside the country.

The agency said the suspect will be charged to court upon conclusion of police investigations.

Mohammed also raised concern over the rising cases of sexual abuse involving minors in the state, revealing that the agency is currently handling several similar cases, including allegations involving parents and other close relations.

She described child molestation and rape as a growing problem, stressing the need for stronger protection measures and accountability.
