Atiku Abubakar has declared that the 2027 presidential election will be his final attempt at winning the office. Having contested for the presidency multiple times since 1993.
Atiku stated that this upcoming cycle marks the conclusion of his personal pursuit of the nation’s highest position.
Atiku emphasized that his continued interest in the presidency is driven by a desire to reform the country rather than a mere quest for power. He noted that he remains committed to providing an alternative vision for Nigeria, focusing on economic recovery and national unity.
The former Vice President also addressed the ongoing discussions regarding a potential merger of opposition parties. He expressed his willingness to support a coalition of political forces to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), provided such an alliance is built on shared principles and a clear roadmap for the country.
Furthermore, Atiku clarified that he would not hesitate to support a younger candidate if the proposed coalition or the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) decides on a different direction. He suggested that his priority is the success of the opposition in providing better governance for Nigerians.
Reflecting on the current administration’s performance, Atiku criticized the economic policies of the APC, highlighting the rising cost of living and inflation. He argued that the current trajectory of the country necessitates a coordinated effort by the opposition to offer a more stable and prosperous path forward.
Regarding his long-standing political career, Atiku noted that his experiences have given him a deep understanding of Nigeria’s complexities. He maintained that his final run would be focused on laying a foundation for sustainable development and institutional reforms that he believes are currently lacking.
The announcement has sparked significant discussion within the Nigerian political landscape as parties begin to strategize for the 2027 polls. Atiku’s decision to set a definitive end to his presidential aspirations marks a potential turning point for the PDP and the broader opposition movement.
