Showunmi Slams APC Over Adoption of Solomon Adeola as Consensus Candidate

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Showunmi, has criticised the adoption of Senator Solomon Adeola as the consensus governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, describing the move as an imposition.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Showunmi argued that the decision lacks the integrity required for a credible consensus, warning that it signals a broader attempt at political control in the state.

He maintained that while political parties are entitled to determine their internal processes, any consensus arrangement must be rooted in transparency and fairness to be legitimate. According to him, the current development undermines democratic principles and reflects coercion rather than genuine agreement.

The PDP chieftain further described the move as a test of political independence among Ogun residents, cautioning against allowing party loyalty or convenience to override accountability and freedom.

The criticism follows the adoption of Adeola as the APC’s consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 election during a strategic caucus meeting held in Abeokuta.

The meeting was attended by key party stakeholders, including Governor Dapo Abiodun and former governors of the state.

Abiodun announced the decision at the end of the meeting, stating that Adeola emerged as the unanimously agreed candidate.
