ADC Faction Suspends Atiku Abubakar, Babachir Lawal in Adamawa

A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State has announced the suspension of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, over alleged anti-party activities.

The faction, led by Raji Zumo, disclosed the decision at a press conference in Yola, stating that the move followed consultations within its leadership. It also suspended Sadiq Ibrahim, who heads the party’s transition committee in the state.

Zumo said the affected individuals were sanctioned for allegedly promoting disunity, creating parallel party structures, and defying an existing court order, insisting that no member is above the party’s constitution.

However, the decision has been rejected by key figures within the party. Lawal dismissed the suspension, questioning the legitimacy of the factional leadership and urging members to ignore it. Similarly, the recognised state chairman, Shehu Yohanna, described the action as baseless, maintaining that Zumo lacks authority to act on behalf of the party.

The dispute has also moved to the courts, with a High Court in Yola ordering a halt to planned ADC congresses in the state pending the resolution of a suit challenging the process. The case, filed by Yohanna, has been adjourned to April 15 for further hearing.

The development highlights the deepening internal crisis within the ADC, which has faced prolonged leadership disputes at both state and national levels.

The party has been fractured into multiple factions since 2025, amid disagreements over its leadership structure and direction.
