Trump to Host UFC Cage Fight on White House Lawn for 80th Birthday

President Donald Trump plans to celebrate his 80th birthday by hosting a major UFC cage fight tournament on the White House South Lawn.

A giant arena called “The Claw” has been built for Sunday’s event, which will feature 14 Ultimate Fighting Championship contestants. The $60 million “UFC Freedom 250” event is also meant to kick off the 250th anniversary of American independence.

Critics have slammed the unprecedented event as tone-deaf, given that Trump’s war in Iran has sent living costs soaring for ordinary Americans.

However, Trump insists that UFC is bearing all the costs. He told the New York Post that the fighters are “the roughest people you’ll ever meet,” adding that those who haven’t seen the sport will not believe it. Trump has long been close to UFC leadership and has attended many fights before.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio also hailed the event as he signed a partnership deal with UFC boss Dana White to promote mixed martial arts internationally. Rubio called it a gift to the American people, adding that it would likely be watched by a billion people worldwide. Around 4,000 people will watch inside the arena, with over half being US military members. Another 125,000 are expected to watch on a giant screen nearby.

The 600-ton arena stands 154 feet wide and 92 feet tall, making it taller than the White House itself. It now sits on the same lawn where President Bill Clinton hosted the 1993 Oslo peace accords and Richard Nixon gave his final farewell. Peter Loge of George Washington University said the macho display during war and economic turmoil reflects Trump’s governing style, calling it “gladiators” meant to project strength and control.

Not everyone is pleased. The Trump administration has had to fight a lawsuit seeking to stop the event over claims of improper use of public land. The White House has rejected the claims and confirmed that “The Claw” will be taken down immediately after the event ends, dismissing Trump’s own suggestion that it could remain like the Eiffel Tower.
