RSU Student Reportedly Detained After Viral Confrontation With Deputy Vice-Chancellor

A fresh student of the Rivers State University (RSU), Port Harcourt, has reportedly been detained following a viral confrontation with a Deputy Vice-Chancellor, an incident that has stirred widespread discussion across social media platforms.

The encounter, which was captured on video and circulated online, shows a tense exchange between the undergraduate and the senior university official inside a crowded classroom.

According to accounts accompanying the viral footage, the confrontation began after the student arrived late for a lecture. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, who oversees the university’s Engineering Department, was said to have questioned the student’s lateness, leading to a heated back-and-forth.

In the video, the student attempts to respond while the DVC admonishes him, drawing the attention of other students who watched in disbelief.

Eyewitnesses who shared additional context online claim that the situation escalated beyond the classroom. Some posts suggest that the student was later taken into custody by either university security personnel or law enforcement authorities. However, no official confirmation has been issued by the school management or the police, leaving the reported detention unverified for now.

Videos of the confrontation have fueled strong reactions, with many Nigerians debating student conduct, administrative discipline, and broader concerns about how universities handle conflicts between staff and students.

Others have called for RSU to release a clear statement addressing what transpired and the status of the student involved.

As of now, the university has not released an official comment, and details surrounding the alleged detention remain unclear. The incident continues to attract public attention as students, parents, and online observers await further clarification from Rivers State University and relevant authorities.
