Ex-AKSU SUG President Dies at Enugu NYSC Camp; NANS Alleges Fake Drugs, Demands Probe

The immediate past Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), Comrade Etimbuk Daniel, has died at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Enugu State.

Daniel, who was serving under the 2026 Batch C Stream, was reported to have died a few days after reporting to camp.

His death was announced on Sunday, October 11, 2026, by the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez.

In a condolence statement, Afeez said he received the news of Daniel’s death with “rude shock,” describing it as a painful loss to the Nigerian student community.

According to NANS, preliminary information available to the association indicated that Daniel complained of headache at the orientation camp and was given medication at the camp clinic.

It was alleged that his condition worsened after taking the drugs and that he requested to be transferred to a hospital for better medical attention. NANS claimed that the necessary approval for his transfer was delayed, and he died before he could be moved.

The most troubling part of the NANS statement was the allegation that the medication administered to him may have been fake.

“We were further informed that the doctor later identified the drugs administered to him as fake. These are deeply troubling allegations that require a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding his tragic death,” Afeez stated.

As of the time of filing this report, the claim regarding fake medication has not been independently verified, and the NYSC management in Enugu State has not issued an official statement on the medical cause of death or the circumstances surrounding it.

NANS has called for a transparent and comprehensive investigation into the incident.

“The menace of fake drugs continues to pose a grave threat to lives in our society, and this tragic incident underscores the urgent need for accountability, proper medical care, and stronger measures to protect the lives of our young people,” the NANS President said.

The association extended its condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, as well as the management and students of Akwa Ibom State University.

Comrade Etimbuk Daniel was widely regarded as an active student leader during his time as SUG President of AKSU.

NANS said its further actions and official position on the matter would be communicated in due course, while urging corps members across the country to remain calm as it engages relevant authorities.

Efforts to reach the NYSC Enugu State Coordinator for comments were unsuccessful as at press time.
