Restaurant Workers Arraigned for Attempted Murder After Assault on Lagos Environmental Taskforce Officials
Eight staff members of the Yakoyo Abula Joint restaurant in Victoria Island, Lagos, have been arraigned on charges of attempted murder following a violent confrontation with officials from the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) and the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO).
The arraignment took place at a Magistrates’ Court in Bolade, Oshodi, where the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court has ordered that they be remanded in custody until January 28, 2026, pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The incident occurred on December 10, 2025, when environmental enforcement officers visited the restaurant on Sinari Adaranijo Street to address reports that the establishment was discharging untreated wastewater, fats, and oil into the environment. The team attempted to seal the premises in line with enforcement regulations, but the restaurant staff allegedly resisted violently.
According to Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the workers not only broke the government seal but also attacked the officials, resulting in injuries to four enforcement personnel.
Wahab condemned the assault, describing it as a direct attack on lawful government operations.
The accused individuals — including Ibiwunmi Oladunjoye, Sikiru Oyelami, Aja Daniel, Sanusi Abayomi, Timothy Emmanuel, Ajoke Adegoke, Sulaimon Akinbola, and Ridwan Adeshina — are now in custody as the Lagos State government continues its investigation.
Following the incident, authorities sealed the restaurant, reinforcing that any obstruction or assault against government officials during enforcement operations will be met with strict legal consequences.
The case underscores ongoing efforts by Lagos State to enforce environmental regulations and curb pollution, while highlighting the potential risks faced by enforcement officers in the course of their duties.
Authorities have indicated that they will pursue the matter diligently, ensuring accountability and adherence to environmental laws.
