The Imo State House of Assembly has officially approved a motion to rename the prominent Douglas Road in Owerri after Governor Hope Uzodimma, marking another landmark decision in the state’s ongoing effort to recognize individuals who have contributed significantly to Imo’s development.

The motion, which was passed during a plenary session of the Assembly, is part of the Uzodimma administration’s broader agenda to honor leaders whose work has positively impacted the state. Speaking on the initiative, lawmakers described the renaming as a symbolic gesture of appreciation for the governor’s dedication to infrastructural development and public service.

Governor Uzodimma, who has overseen the completion of more than 120 roads across Imo State, has been credited with several major projects aimed at improving urban mobility and connectivity. While supporters view the renaming as a fitting tribute to the governor’s achievements, some critics have expressed concern over altering historically established landmarks, citing the importance of preserving cultural heritage and public memory. Government officials, however, insist that the renaming is not merely ceremonial but reflects a broader commitment to enhancing urban infrastructure and celebrating leadership that drives development.
