Imo Assembly Approves Renaming of Douglas Road After Governor Hope Uzodimma

The Imo State House of Assembly has officially approved a motion to rename the prominent Douglas Road in Owerri after Governor Hope Uzodimma, marking another landmark decision in the state’s ongoing effort to recognize individuals who have contributed significantly to Imo’s development.

The motion, which was passed during a plenary session of the Assembly, is part of the Uzodimma administration’s broader agenda to honor leaders whose work has positively impacted the state. Speaking on the initiative, lawmakers described the renaming as a symbolic gesture of appreciation for the governor’s dedication to infrastructural development and public service.

Governor Uzodimma, who has overseen the completion of more than 120 roads across Imo State, has been credited with several major projects aimed at improving urban mobility and connectivity. Notable among these projects are the dualization of the Owerri–Orlu and Owerri–Okigwe roads, which have significantly eased traffic congestion and enhanced transportation for residents and commuters.

This latest renaming follows previous actions by the Uzodimma administration to commemorate prominent figures. In 2024, the Assembly recommended that the Imo International Conference Centre be renamed in honor of the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, a respected Igbo leader and philanthropist.

Similarly, Heroes Square in Owerri was renamed Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu Heroes Square, recognizing the late admiral’s contributions to the state’s infrastructure and civic life. The decision has sparked mixed reactions among residents and stakeholders.

While supporters view the renaming as a fitting tribute to the governor’s achievements, some critics have expressed concern over altering historically established landmarks, citing the importance of preserving cultural heritage and public memory. Government officials, however, insist that the renaming is not merely ceremonial but reflects a broader commitment to enhancing urban infrastructure and celebrating leadership that drives development.

According to sources within the government, the motion is part of a strategic plan to modernize Owerri’s road networks while simultaneously honoring key figures in the state’s political and social history. As plans for the official implementation of the renaming move forward, residents of Owerri are keenly observing how the change will affect navigation, public perception, and the city’s urban identity. The Uzodimma administration has assured the public that the transition will be seamless, with appropriate signage and public awareness campaigns to guide motorists and pedestrians.
