NDLEA Seizes 748kg of Tramadol on Benin-Lagos Road

Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted a huge shipment of tramadol along the busy Benin-Lagos road.

The agency seized 748 kilograms of the illegal painkiller, which is often abused by drug users. Officials said the drugs were hidden inside a commercial truck trying to blend in with regular goods. The arrest happened after a tip-off from local sources.

NDLEA commanders stated that the tramadol was packed in large sacks and buried under legitimate cargo. The driver of the truck was taken into custody for questioning. This route is known for moving illicit drugs from southern border towns into Lagos and other cities. The agency has now increased patrols on that highway to catch more smugglers.

Tramadol abuse has become a serious problem across Nigeria, especially among young people. It causes seizures, organ damage, and violent behavior when taken in high doses.

The NDLEA has made drug interception a top priority under its current leadership. Last month alone, the agency reported seizing over two tons of various illegal substances nationwide.

Residents near the interception point praised the NDLEA for their swift action. Many complained that drug sellers operate openly in some neighborhoods, fueling crime and addiction. Community leaders have now offered to form watch groups to help the agency spot suspicious vehicles. The seized tramadol will be destroyed in a public ceremony as a warning to traffickers.

The NDLEA has called on travelers and drivers to report any strange packages on buses or trucks. Officials also warned that anyone caught trafficking drugs will face full prosecution. “This 748kg seizure is a big blow to the cartels,” an agency spokesman said. “We will not rest until our roads and streets are free of these dangerous pills.
