Remi Tinubu Opens Food Bank to Help North-East Nigeria

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has launched a new food bank in the country’s North-East region. The announcement came on April 27, 2026. The project aims to help thousands of families who struggle to find enough to eat each day.

Years of conflict and displacement have left many people in the area without farms or incomes. This food bank is designed to be a direct and steady source of meals for the most vulnerable.

The food bank will collect rice, beans, cooking oil, and other staples from donors. Local teams will then pack and hand out these items to families in need. The plan covers both major towns and remote villages that rarely receive aid.

Regular distribution days will ensure that no one goes to bed hungry. Community groups will help run the process to make sure food reaches the right people.

Senator Tinubu has supported social welfare projects before, including the “Renewed Hope Initiative” for farmers. Her office worked with North-East state governors to choose the best location for the food bank. The First Lady did not attend the opening in person but sent a message urging everyone to share what they can. Local leaders have welcomed the project, saying it will ease the burden on poor households.

Residents have responded with cautious hope. A widow in Maiduguri said such help would have saved her children from many hungry nights. Some people worry about corruption or supplies running out. To address this, organizers promise a transparent system with community oversight committees.

Farmers and shop owners have also pledged to donate extra produce when possible.

Officials say the food bank will run for the whole year, with plans to expand if it succeeds. More food banks may open in other hungry zones like the North-West. Senator Tinubu has called on wealthy Nigerians and companies to send donations. As one local chief said, “A food bank is not just a storehouse; it is a sign that someone has not forgotten us
