A lawyer has urged the Federal and state governments to enforce disability laws, improve infrastructure and promote inclusion for visually impaired persons in the country.

The call was made during an event focused on supporting blind persons, where concerns were raised over the poor implementation of existing laws meant to protect the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities.

According to the lawyer, many visually impaired Nigerians continue to face challenges in accessing public facilities, education, employment and mobility due to lack of inclusive infrastructure and weak enforcement of disability rights legislation.

The image accompanying the report showed members of the Lions Club and other stakeholders presenting white canes to visually impaired persons, as part of efforts to support their mobility and independence.

The lawyer stressed that enforcing disability laws would ensure that public buildings, roads and transportation systems are designed with accessibility features that accommodate the needs of blind and other disabled persons.

He further urged government at all levels to allocate more resources to programmes that promote the welfare of visually impaired persons, including provision of assistive devices, training and inclusive education.

Stakeholders at the event commended the initiative and called for sustained advocacy to ensure that blind persons are given a better deal and fully integrated into society with dignity and equal opportunities.
