Tinubu Tasks Newly Appointed Envoys on Improving Nigeria’s Global Image

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged Nigeria’s newly appointed ambassadors and high commissioners to actively work toward improving the country’s global reputation while strengthening diplomatic and economic relations with other nations.

Tinubu gave the charge on Monday during an induction programme for the newly appointed envoys held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja. He was represented at the event by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.

The President said the appointments reflect confidence in the diplomats’ ability to project Nigeria positively on the international stage and advance national interests through effective representation.

He noted that the current global environment, marked by geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty, technological changes, and security challenges, requires a more strategic and results-oriented diplomatic approach from Nigeria’s foreign missions.

Tinubu tasked the envoys to prioritize the attraction of foreign direct investment, strengthen bilateral and multilateral partnerships, and ensure that Nigeria’s image abroad aligns with the ongoing reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He further emphasized the need for modern diplomacy, including the use of digital engagement and public diplomacy tools, to reshape global perceptions of Nigeria. The President also directed the diplomats to give priority to the welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora, while ensuring that foreign missions operate with greater accountability, efficiency, and measurable outcomes.

According to him, Nigeria’s foreign policy is being repositioned to place citizens at the centre, with increased focus on development diplomacy, diaspora engagement, and the protection of national interests.

Tinubu reminded the envoys that they represent the face of Nigeria abroad and must uphold professionalism, integrity, and patriotism in carrying out their duties. He also commended the National Assembly for confirming the appointments and urged the new diplomats to justify the confidence reposed in them by delivering tangible results in trade, investment promotion, and international cooperation.

The induction marks a significant step in Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen its diplomatic presence globally following a period of limited ambassadorial representation in several missions.
