The Anambra State Police Command have arrested a man identified as Chima Ofoeke over the suspected murder of 23-year-old Mmesoma Umeorini in Uga, Aguata Local Government Area of the state.
The arrest followed a report by the victim’s mother to the Umuchu Divisional Police Officer that her daughter had been missing since October 16, 2026, despite efforts to locate her.
Police operatives, acting on intelligence and working alongside members of the Agunechemba security outfit in Uga, apprehended the suspect, who was identified as the deceased’s former boyfriend.
During preliminary interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to killing the young woman following the breakdown of their relationship. He subsequently led detectives to the location where her remains were discovered and recovered.
In a video circulating online, the suspect was heard claiming that he killed the woman because she had ended their relationship. He reportedly disclosed that the incident occurred at his residence in Uga, where he allegedly placed her body inside a bag before dumping it elsewhere.
The incident has sparked reactions, with residents expressing sadness over the killing and condemning violence arising from failed relationships.
One resident stressed that ending a relationship should never expose anyone to threats or violence, urging people to take warning signs seriously and seek assistance when they feel unsafe.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Nnanna Ama, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for a thorough investigation.
