Bayern Munich Coach Vincent Kompany Rushed to Hospital After Collapsing at Training Ground
Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital on Friday after collapsing during a training session, the German champions have confirmed.
The 40-year-old Belgian had been watching a session for the club’s reserve team at the Säbener Straße training complex when he required medical attention.
In a statement, Bayern said Kompany is undergoing thorough examinations and will remain under medical care. His coaching staff will run all training and match-day operations for the time being. German outlet Bild and Sky in Germany reported that his condition is stable. The club has not given a diagnosis or a timeframe for his return.
Kompany had been unwell for some time. He was battling a virus in recent days and missed training and a pre-match news conference on Tuesday, when assistant Aaron Danks took over his duties. He was back on the touchline for Wednesday’s 2-2 Champions League draw with Arsenal in Munich. Afterwards he admitted he had not listened to his body, saying it had reached a point where it said enough was enough.
Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, said Kompany’s health is the club’s top priority and that he will be given all the time he needs to recover. The club said everyone at Bayern wishes the coach a quick recovery.
The development comes with Bayern due to host Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday, a match the coaching staff will now oversee without the head coach.
