Five Critically Injured in Denmark Head-On Train Collision

A serious head-on train collision occurred in Denmark on the morning of Thursday, April 23, 2026, causing significant alarm and emergency activity.

The crash took place on a regional line linking Hillerød and Kagerup in the North Zealand region, located northeast of Copenhagen.

Emergency officials confirmed that there were 37 passengers on board the two trains at the time of the collision. Alerted to the incident at 06:29 local time, rescue teams and fire departments were quickly deployed to the site to initiate life-saving operations and secure the area.

The human toll of the crash was significant, with five individuals suffering critical injuries. These victims were immediately prioritized for emergency transport, with some rushed to Copenhagen’s main hospital via ambulance, while others were transported by air to ensure they received specialized medical attention as quickly as possible.

In addition to those critically injured, authorities reported that 13 other passengers sustained less serious wounds during the impact. The sudden nature of the crash prompted a large-scale response, involving coordinated efforts from medical professionals and first responders to manage the situation and provide care to all involved.

Visual evidence from the scene, broadcast by public media, depicted the severity of the incident. The two yellow and grey trains were shown facing each other in a wooded area, with visible and extensive front-end damage that highlighted the intensity of the head-on collision.

Local officials expressed profound shock and concern in the immediate aftermath of the accident. Trine Egetved, the mayor of Gribskov municipality, voiced deep distress over the situation and confirmed that all efforts were focused on ensuring the critically injured received the best possible care at the capital’s central hospital.

A formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash has been launched to determine the cause. Denmark’s Accident Investigation Board is working closely with the North Zealand Police to analyze evidence from the tracks and the trains, as well as operational logs from the morning of the collision.

While officials maintain it is too early to issue a definitive conclusion, preliminary speculation suggests that one train may have entered the wrong track after overriding a stop signal. This possibility has been compounded by reports that the specific rail line involved in the incident is not believed to be equipped with an automated safety system, raising questions about current rail infrastructure and safety protocols.
