Badagry Market Closes as Akran Burial Rites Begin
The main market in Badagry, Lagos State, has been shut down as burial rites for the late Akran of Badagry begins.
The closure is part of traditional customs to honor the passing of the revered traditional ruler. All trading activities have been suspended until the rites are completed. Residents and traders have been asked to observe the period with solemn respect.
The late Akran was a highly respected monarch who ruled over the Badagry kingdom for many years. His death has thrown the community into a period of mourning. Traditional chiefs and elders have stepped in to oversee the burial ceremonies according to ancient customs. These rites include prayers, drumming, and processions that involve many local groups.
Market activities have been halted because the market is considered a central part of community life. In Badagry tradition, major events like a king’s burial require full participation from everyone. Shops, stalls, and temporary vendors have all been ordered to stay closed.
Officials say trading will only resume once the final burial ceremonies are complete.
Local leaders have appealed for calm and patience from traders who depend on daily sales. Many of them will lose income during the shutdown. However, traditional chiefs explained that honoring the late king takes priority over all other activities. They promised to keep the rites as short as custom allows so that business can return to normal quickly.
Residents are now focused on giving the late Akran a dignified farewell. The closure is expected to last several days, depending on traditional schedules. After the burial, a new monarch may eventually be chosen to sit on the throne. For now, Badagry stands still to say goodbye to a king who ruled for decades.
