Corps Member Beaten to Death by Vigilantes in Benue

A serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, identified as Ben Agir, was allegedly beaten to death by members of a local vigilante group in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State.

The incident reportedly occurred during a night patrol operation between 11:00 PM and 12:00 AM on Sunday, April 19, 2026.

According to the Chairman of Buruku LGA, Raymond Aondoakura, the vigilantes accosted the victim under the suspicion that he was involved in motorcycle theft. Despite the victim potentially being able to explain his identity, a leader of the vigilante group reportedly initiated a physical assault, claiming the victim was not being truthful.

The assault was severe enough to leave the victim in a coma. The vigilante group subsequently transported him to a hospital, where he eventually died from his injuries.

Following the incident, the local government chairman confirmed that the suspects involved in the attack have been arrested and handed over to the police for further investigation. In response to the tragedy, the council has suspended the activities of all vigilante groups in the area, pending the implementation of proper regulations.

While the local government chairman confirmed the deceased was a serving corps member, the NYSC Public Relations Officer in Benue State, Mrs. Veronica Ogwuche, stated that preliminary information suggests the deceased may have been serving in Gombe State rather than Benue.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the event.
