Godfather Likens Unregulated AI to Speeding With No Steering Wheel
Geoffrey Hinton, widely known as the Godfather of AI, has issued a strong warning about the dangers of artificial intelligence without proper rules.
He compared unregulated AI to speeding in a car with no steering wheel.
The 78-year-old scientist made his comments during a major conference in Geneva, where experts discussed the future of the technology.
Hinton stressed that we need strict rules for AI right now. He said some people argue that regulation only slows progress, but he believes it is like putting brakes on a fast car without any way to steer safely. Without these controls, he fears super-intelligent AI could become too powerful for humans to handle.
The British-Canadian computer scientist won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2024 for his groundbreaking work on AI. He left his role at Google in 2023 after raising concerns about the serious risks the technology poses to society and humanity.
Even today, as AI advances quickly, he remains deeply worried.
Hinton also highlighted the threat of job losses caused by AI. While it can make some areas like healthcare more productive, it is already replacing workers in call centres and could soon take over most thinking jobs.
He noted that AI might do these tasks better and cheaper than people, leaving many without work.
Humans still have some control for now, Hinton said, but we must build AI carefully so that we can live safely alongside it. He called for more focus and resources on making the technology safer, warning that only a tiny part of current AI work is aimed at protecting society.
