INEC Pledges Level Playing Field in Osun Governorship Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has given a strong promise to people in Osun State that the upcoming governorship election will be peaceful, fair, and open.

The new Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, made this clear during a meeting at the INEC office in Osogbo. She said every vote would count and the process would be transparent for everyone.

The assurance came after some residents, including market women and civil society groups, held a protest. They were worried about the recent transfer of the former REC, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, and feared it could affect the election set for August 15, 2026.

The group, led by Mr. Musa Abdulsalam of the Coalition of Concerned Nigerian Citizens, submitted a petition asking INEC to keep the process free from any outside influence.

Mrs. Babalola, who spoke through officials like Mr. Niyi Fayanju from the legal department and Mr. Rufus Ariyo from voters’ education, told the protesters their concerns were understandable.

She explained that staff transfers are normal and follow the rules. The commission has already made plans to ensure the election is free, fair, and ends with a clear result that everyone can trust.

Protesters, including women like Mrs. Sadiat Amsat and Ms. Temitope Abass, urged the new leadership not to favour any political party. They called for full honesty so that the people’s choice is respected. INEC listened and repeated its commitment to running a poll where no one can tamper with the outcome.

With this fresh assurance, residents in Osun now have hope that the governorship election will reflect the true will of the voters. The commission’s promise aims to build confidence ahead of the big day. Officials believe that staying true to these words will help bring lasting peace and trust in the democratic process across the state.
