Coalition Backs Jonathan for 2027 Presidency, Cites Experience

A political advocacy group, the Coalition for Goodluck Jonathan 2027, has declared former President Goodluck Jonathan as the most qualified leader to address Nigeria’s current challenges, confirming moves to position him for the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking at an international press conference in Abuja, the coalition’s president, Tom Ohikere, said the group has begun mobilising support across the country and in the diaspora to facilitate Jonathan’s return to national leadership.

Ohikere described the coalition as a central coordinating platform bringing together various support groups with a shared goal of restoring stability, reviving economic confidence, and promoting responsible governance.

He said Nigeria is currently grappling with economic and security challenges, including rising inflation, unemployment, insecurity, and currency instability, which he noted have worsened hardship and weakened public trust in government.

According to him, the situation demands experienced leadership with a deep understanding of governance, adding that Jonathan’s track record across multiple levels of public service positions him as a strong contender.

“Jonathan remains one of the few Nigerians with comprehensive experience in governance and a proven record of national leadership,” he said.

The coalition also emphasised its commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, promoting credible elections, and upholding the rule of law, stressing that rebuilding public confidence in governance is a priority.

Highlighting Jonathan’s previous administration, the group said his tenure was marked by adherence to democratic values, institutional stability, and economic reforms. It added that outcomes of the 2014 National Conference remain relevant to ongoing discussions on national restructuring.

The group further criticised comments by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar questioning Jonathan’s experience, describing the remarks as inaccurate and inconsistent with his record in public service.

Ohikere noted that Jonathan’s progression from deputy governor to governor, vice president, and eventually president reflects extensive governance experience.

He also referenced Jonathan’s concession in the 2015 election as a landmark moment in Nigeria’s democratic history.

The coalition said consultations with stakeholders and political groups nationwide are ongoing, with plans to intensify grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

It urged Nigerians to reflect on past and present leadership as they consider the country’s future, adding that support for Jonathan represents a pathway to restoring stability and national direction.
