Police Train Detectives on Cryptocurrency Crime Investigation
The Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU) in Ikoyi, Lagos, has conducted a specialised training for its operatives to enhance their ability to investigate crimes linked to cryptocurrency and other digital assets.
The exercise took place on Friday at Sunday Adewusi House in Ikoyi and was organised in partnership with the United States Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation, with support from the United States Consulate in Lagos.
According to a statement issued by the unit’s spokesperson, Ovie Ewhubare, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police in charge of the PSFU, Eloho Okpoziakpo, the programme is part of efforts to strengthen the unit’s response to emerging financial crimes.
Okpoziakpo said the initiative reflects the broader goal of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to develop a more proactive, intelligence-driven and technology-focused policing system.
He explained that the training covered key areas such as tracking cryptocurrency transactions, analysing digital assets and adopting modern investigative techniques for cyber-enabled financial crimes.
Okpoziakpo noted that the increasing use of digital currencies has created new challenges for law enforcement, making it necessary for officers to keep pace with evolving criminal methods.
He added that participants were also introduced to how cryptocurrencies operate, including their structure, applications and regulatory environment, which would improve their capacity to handle related cases.
The PSFU is tasked with investigating complex financial and cyber-related offences across the country.
