Dangote Group Debunks Viral Claim on Cement Revenue, Says Statement Attributed to Dangote False

The Dangote Group has dismissed as false, a viral claim alleging that the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu earns revenue from every bag of cement sold in Nigeria.

The claim, which circulated widely on social media, particularly Facebook, was attributed to Aliko Dangote, chairman of the Dangote Group. It alleged that the Federal Government receives “52 kobo from every ₦1 on cement,” amounting to about ₦6,240 per bag.

Reacting to the development, the Dangote Group described the statement as fake and misattributed. In a public response shared on its official social media platforms, the company clearly marked the viral post as false, distancing both its chairman and the organisation from the claim.

The company stressed that at no point did Dangote make such remarks, urging the public to disregard the information in its entirety.

The misinformation, believed to have originated from a Facebook user, gained traction rapidly, sparking widespread debate and concern over cement pricing and government revenue policies.

Some versions of the post also questioned why the government continues to borrow despite the alleged income from cement sales.

However, there is no evidence to support the existence of such a taxation or revenue structure. Industry experts note that cement pricing in Nigeria is influenced by factors such as production costs, energy prices, transportation, and standard government taxes not a fixed per-bag remittance as claimed in the viral message.

The incident underscores growing concerns over the spread of misinformation, particularly when it involves prominent public figures and sensitive economic issues.

Analysts warn that false claims of this nature can mislead the public and distort understanding of government policies and market dynamics.

The Dangote Group’s rebuttal comes amid ongoing public scrutiny of rising costs of building materials and broader economic challenges in the country.
