Abia PHC Performs Rare Emergency C‑Section, Delivers Twins
By Rachel Akper
A primary healthcare centre in Abia State has successfully carried out a rare emergency caesarean section, delivering healthy twins.
The procedure took place at Ohiya Primary Healthcare Centre in Umuahia South Local Government Area after the mother developed complications that required immediate surgical intervention.
Health officials described the delivery as unusual because such complex surgeries are not commonly performed at the primary health care level, where most high-risk cases are typically referred to general or teaching hospitals.
Medical personnel at the centre said the success reflects growing capacity in local healthcare facilities to manage emergency obstetric cases. Both the mother and her twins were reported to be in stable condition and responding well to post-operative care.
The state’s health authorities commended the medical team, emphasizing that this development demonstrates the impact of recent upgrades and training programs aimed at improving maternal and child healthcare services in Abia State.
Officials noted that the milestone is expected to boost public confidence in primary health centres and encourage more women in rural communities to seek care early, potentially reducing maternal and infant mortality rates.
