Spain Removes Ambassador to Israel as Diplomatic Tensions Rise

The government of Spain has officially removed its ambassador to Israel, marking a new development in the strained diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The decision, approved by the Spanish government and published in the country’s official state bulletin, effectively ends the tenure of Spain’s ambassador to Israel, Ana Salomón Pérez. Following the move, Spain’s embassy in Tel Aviv will be headed by a chargé d’affaires, a lower-ranking diplomat who will manage the mission in the absence of a full ambassador.

The development reflects the growing diplomatic tensions between Madrid and Jerusalem in recent months, largely linked to disagreements over the ongoing conflict in Gaza and broader Middle East policies.

Relations between both countries have been under pressure since Spain joined other European nations in criticizing Israel’s military operations in Gaza.

Tensions intensified further after Spain formally recognized the State of Palestine in May 2024, a move strongly opposed by Israel. Following that decision, Israeli officials issued diplomatic protests and summoned Spanish representatives, while both sides exchanged strong political statements.

Analysts say the removal of the ambassador signals a downgrade in diplomatic engagement rather than a complete break in relations. Spain will still maintain an embassy presence in Israel through its chargé d’affaires, ensuring limited diplomatic communication continues between the two governments.

The latest development comes amid heightened tensions across the Middle East, with ongoing conflict and geopolitical rivalries continuing to shape diplomatic relations between Israel and several European countries.

Diplomatic observers say the situation could further influence European Union debates on the Middle East crisis and the broader international response to the conflict.
