Pope Prays for End to ‘Roar of the Bombs’ as Middle East Violence Escalates

Pope Leo XIV on Sunday issued a solemn plea for peace in the Middle East, urging that the “roar of bombs” across the region be silenced and calling on world leaders to prioritize dialogue over conflict.

Delivering his Angelus address from the Vatican, the Pope expressed deep concern over the intensifying military actions in the region. He highlighted the risk of the conflict spreading to neighboring countries, particularly Lebanon, and warned that continued hostilities would only deepen fear, hatred, and instability.

“The news from the Middle East continues to arouse deep dismay,” he said. “We pray that weapons fall silent and that a space for dialogue opens, where the voices of ordinary people can be heard.

The Pope’s remarks come amid a week of heightened tension, as a US‑Israeli air campaign targeting Iranian sites entered its ninth day. The strikes have focused on key infrastructure, including fuel depots in Tehran, triggering massive fires and thick smoke that blankets the Iranian capital.

In retaliation, Iranian forces launched missile and drone strikes on targets in the Gulf region, including the UAE, Bahrain, and Kuwait, escalating fears of a wider regional conflict. The violence has already resulted in civilian and military casualties in multiple countries, while international observers warn that the situation could spiral further if not contained. Israel has also carried out strikes in southern Lebanon and other strategic locations, raising concerns about broader destabilization. Vatican officials, including the Secretary of State, have criticized the strikes for undermining international law and emphasized that preventive wars cannot justify the human and political costs of continued violence. The Pope reiterated his previous appeals for world leaders to reject war and embrace diplomatic solutions, emphasizing the importance of listening to the concerns of ordinary citizens caught in the crossfire. Global religious and diplomatic voices have joined the Pope in calling for calm, noting that the escalation threatens not only regional security but also global economic and humanitarian stability. International organizations are closely monitoring the situation as military operations continue to disrupt energy supplies, trade routes, and the daily lives of millions of civilians. While the conflict remains unresolved, Pope Leo XIV’s urgent call for peace highlights the growing concern among global leaders and faith communities that the Middle East could face even greater humanitarian and political crises if the violence continues unchecked.
