Lagos Assembly Halts Demolitions, Orders Two-Week Reconciliation for Victims

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

Lagos State House of Assembly has ordered a halt on further demolitions in the Makoko and Shogunle communities.

The lawmakers are pushing for a reconciliatory process with affected residents to be completed within a two-week timeframe.

Affected communities have been directed to form 10-member committees to represent their interests during negotiations. These committees must include diverse representatives, such as women, youths, students, and traditional leaders, to ensure a comprehensive dialogue.

The Assembly also approved a 250-metre setback from the Third Mainland Bridge and a 250-metre buffer beyond power line corridors. All forms of development within these newly designated areas are strictly prohibited to ensure public safety and infrastructure integrity.

State officials confirmed that the Executive Council is currently finalizing compensation plans for displaced residents. While these financial arrangements are being processed, relief materials and palliatives are already being distributed to provide immediate support.

The Chairman of Yaba LCDA expressed confidence that the two-week resolution window is achievable. He urged community leaders to avoid personal interests that could derail the peace talks and urged residents to follow the new directives.

The House emphasized its commitment to finding a lasting solution that balances urban development with the welfare of citizens. Further actions regarding the cleared sites will depend on the outcome of the ongoing reconciliation meetings.
