A blast has rocked a military police facility in Sertolovo, north of St. Petersburg. The explosion caused several floors to collapse, leaving the building in ruins.
Local reports confirm at least three deaths and several injuries. Images show the upper floors caved in as rescue teams search the debris.
Governor Alexander Drozdenko dispatched soldiers and security forces to the scene. There are ongoing fears that the remaining structure could further collapse.
The Investigative Committee launched a probe into potential fire safety violations. They confirmed that “there are casualties as a result of the incident.”
The blast coincided with the start of US-brokered peace talks in Geneva. Sabotage has frequently targeted Russian military infrastructure over the last four years.
While gas leaks are common in Soviet-era buildings, the cause remains unconfirmed. Authorities are currently investigating whether the event was accidental or deliberate.
Emergency services continue to clear the site to reach potential victims. The Investigative Committee is working to finalize the exact cause of the disaster.
