Nigeria Expands Air Force Capability with M-346 Fighter Acquisition

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has made significant progress in its fleet modernisation drive with the advancement of the M-346 fighter ground attack aircraft programme, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, announced during a visit to Leonardo Aircraft Division in Milan, Italy.

The two-day visit, held from 19 to 20 January 2025, involved high-level discussions with Leonardo, including the Helicopter Division, and included the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministries of Defence and Finance, senior government officials and NAF officers.

Air Marshal Aneke described the M-346 programme as a “critical leap” in renewing the NAF’s combat capability. He said the platform will enhance precision strike operations, improve advanced training outcomes and strengthen Nigeria’s regional deterrence posture through synchronised delivery and smooth induction into operational service.

During the visit, the CAS commended Leonardo’s longstanding support to the NAF, highlighting the reliability of platforms such as the AW-109 Trekker Type B helicopters in counter-terrorism, counter-insurgency and internal security operations.

He also cited the operational record of other Leonardo aircraft in NAF service, including the G-222 and ATR-42, which have supported combat missions, humanitarian assistance and disaster response.

Aneke emphasised the need for timely aircraft delivery, structured training, and the establishment of a Leonardo Support Office in Nigeria to enhance aircraft availability, reduce turnaround time, and ensure long-term sustainment.

Responding, Leonardo Helicopter Division Senior Vice President Andrea Mirteto reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Nigeria as a strategic partner.

The CAS assured Nigerians that the NAF remains committed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to decisively address national security challenges while building a more capable, responsive and resilient Air Force to support national development and economic growth.
