Ijebu-Ode Honours Pa Simeon Ashiru with Church Thanksgiving, Statue Unveiling

Prominent traditional rulers, family members and residents gathered recently in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the passing of respected community leader and public servant, Pa Simeon Ashiru, celebrating his enduring contributions to faith, leadership and social development.

The remembrance programme opened with a thanksgiving service held at the Simeon Adeyemi Ashiru Anglican Church. The service drew a large congregation of well-wishers who participated in hymns, prayers and worship sessions dedicated to reflecting on the life and values of the late patriarch.

Guests arrived in coordinated yellow and blue Ankara outfits, adding colour and symbolism to the occasion. The choice of attire created a visible sense of unity among attendees and underscored the celebratory tone of the event.

In a highlight of the church ceremony, the Ashiru family presented a vehicle to the congregation as part of the anniversary activities. The donation, which was formally dedicated during the service, was described as an expression of gratitude and a practical contribution to the continued growth of the church established in honour of Pa Ashiru.

Activities later shifted to an evening reception that attracted a distinguished gathering of monarchs and dignitaries from across Ijebu Land.

Leading the royal delegation was the Regent Awujale and Ogbeni Oja of Ijebu Land, Dr. Sonny Kuku, who arrived in traditional attire adorned with royal beads and a yellow cap. He was joined by the Ajalorun of Ijebu Ife, Adesesan Oguntayo, whose presence added further prestige to the occasion.

Speakers at the event reflected on Pa Ashiru’s reputation as a man devoted to public service and community advancement, noting that his influence continues to be felt decades after his demise.

The commemoration reached its peak with the official unveiling of a statue erected in his honour at the Okeoyinbo Saka Roundabout in Ijebu-Ode. The monument was commissioned by Ogun State Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, who described it as a fitting tribute to a life of dedication and integrity.

Family representatives explained that the statue was conceived as a permanent landmark to inspire younger generations and preserve the memory of a leader whose impact extended beyond his immediate community.

The anniversary events, which combined solemn reflection with celebration, reinforced Pa Simeon Ashiru’s legacy as a figure whose commitment to faith, service and development remains deeply rooted in the history of Ijebu-Ode.

For many who attended, the day served not only as a moment of remembrance but also as a renewed call to uphold the values for which the late statesman was widely admired.
