Oyebanji Warns Appointees Against Silence on Social Media Attacks

Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State has warned political appointees benefiting from his administration but remaining silent while coordinated attacks against the government spread on social media.

In a statement that has stirred reactions both online and offline, the governor said those who receive financial support from the administration yet fail to defend it when critics drag the government in public space would be held accountable “at the appropriate time.”

Although the remark was first circulated widely on social media, its undertone reflects a growing concern within the ruling party about alleged smear campaigns targeted at the governor.

Only days ago, the Ekiti State Government raised the alarm over what it described as a coordinated online assault against Oyebanji, allegedly bankrolled by political opponents and executed by more than 150 influencers.

The state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) also issued a separate statement cautioning its members against aiding or encouraging such activities, warning that any member found culpable would face sanctions.

The development highlights mounting political tension in Ekiti as Oyebanji consolidates his administration.

His outburst is seen as a direct message to insiders accused of double loyalty—those said to enjoy government patronage while secretly aligning with opposition groups.

Observers say the warning underscores a larger problem faced by political leaders in Nigeria, where social media has become a powerful platform for both legitimate criticism and coordinated propaganda.

For Oyebanji, ensuring loyalty within his government appears just as pressing as tackling the opposition outside of it.
