FG Assures ECOWAS of Commitment to Peaceful and Credible 2027 Elections

The Federal Government has assured the Economic Community of West African States of its commitment to conducting peaceful and credible elections in 2027.

The assurance was given by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, during a meeting with an ECOWAS Pre-Election Fact-Finding Mission in Abuja.

The mission, led by former Sierra Leone Vice-President Victor Bockarie Foh, is assessing Nigeria’s preparedness for the general elections. It is consulting with the Independent National Electoral Commission, political parties, security agencies, civil society groups and the media.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu reaffirmed that the government would ensure transparent, inclusive and credible elections in line with the Constitution and electoral laws. She stressed the importance of institutional readiness, transparent voter accreditation, effective result management and timely resolution of disputes.

The minister also highlighted the need for strong coordination among security agencies to protect candidates, electoral officials, observers and voters. She called for professional and impartial conduct by security personnel while upholding human rights obligations.

Foh welcomed the government’s assurances and expressed optimism about Nigeria’s electoral preparedness. He noted that a successful 2027 election would strengthen democratic governance and stability across West Africa.
