Makinde Tops List as PDP Zones 2027 Ticket to South

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the Southern region of the country, setting the stage for a competitive but regionally focused race.

The decision, confirmed by top party officials on Thursday, is aimed at promoting equity, unity, and regional balance within the opposition party.

Emerging prominently in early discussions is Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, who many party stakeholders consider the most viable and widely acceptable Southern candidate.

According to sources within the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC), the zoning move is part of efforts to restore the party’s national image and re-strategize ahead of the 2027 general election.

“Zoning to the South is not just about fairness it’s about positioning ourselves to win,” a top PDP official said. “And among those being mentioned, Seyi Makinde has the edge.”

Governor Makinde, currently serving his second term, is viewed as a progressive, youth-friendly leader with broad appeal. His performance in Oyo State, combined with his calm leadership style and influence in the South-West, has boosted his national profile.

Analysts say Makinde’s relative political neutrality during past party crises and his technocratic background makes him an attractive candidate to both party loyalists and swing voters.

Although Makinde is leading early speculations, other Southern figures may still join the fray. Names like Rivers’ former Governor Nyesom Wike, and even former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s allies, are reportedly considering options though Atiku himself, from the North, is unlikely to contest given the new zoning directive.
