Olubadan, Oba Olakulehin, Dies Days After Birthday, Coronation at 90

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, has died at the age of 90, bringing to a solemn close a brief but memorable reign over one of Yorubaland’s most culturally significant traditional kingdoms.

His passing was confirmed in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, only two days after he celebrated his milestone 90th birthday and the first anniversary of his coronation.

Oba Olakulehin, who ascended the throne as the 43rd Olubadan on July 12, 2024, was widely respected as a man of dignity, service, and wisdom.

His death has plunged Ibadanland into mourning, especially as it coincides with what was supposed to be a moment of double celebration—marking both his birthday on July 5 and his coronation anniversary.

Born in 1935, Oba Olakulehin led a storied life before becoming monarch. He began his career as a teacher, later joining the Nigerian Army Corps of Engineers where he rose to the rank of Major.

Following his military service, he ventured into business and politics, eventually serving as a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives in the early 1990s.

His long march to the throne followed the traditional Ibadan chieftaincy progression through the civil line—first as Mogaji, then as Balogun, and eventually Olubadan.

Despite his relatively short reign, Oba Olakulehin was deeply admired for his calm leadership and his efforts to preserve and promote Yoruba culture. He was known to champion peace and unity in Ibadan and among the Yoruba people, even as he emphasized the need to modernize traditional institutions while preserving their heritage.

The Olubadan’s passing has triggered the customary rites associated with the transition of power. The Olubadan-in-Council is expected to meet in the coming days to begin the process of selecting his successor, in line with the unique rotational succession system that alternates between the civil and military lines of the Ibadan chieftaincy structure.

As tributes pour in from traditional leaders, government officials, and citizens across Nigeria, preparations are expected to commence for a befitting burial.

The Oyo State Government is also anticipated to make an official announcement concerning the arrangements and the next steps in succession.

Oba Olakulehin’s legacy, though framed within a brief reign, is one that reflects a life of patriotic service, cultural pride, and devotion to the Ibadan people.
