President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to achieve at least 95 per cent coverage of the National Identification Number (NIN) across the country by December 2026.

The directive is part of efforts by the Federal Government to expand Nigeria’s national identity database and ensure that more residents are captured within the country’s identification system.

Tinubu stressed the importance of strengthening the national identity infrastructure, particularly as digital services and government programmes increasingly depend on reliable identification data.

The President also called for improved coordination among agencies involved in identity management to ensure that registration and verification processes become more accessible to Nigerians.

The NIMC is expected to intensify enrolment activities nationwide in order to meet the December target.

The drive is also expected to support more effective delivery of government services, improve identity verification and strengthen planning across various sectors of the economy.

The Federal Government has continued to emphasise the importance of having an accurate and comprehensive national identity database as part of its broader digital transformation agenda.
