Max Dowman’s Brace Fires Arsenal Into Carabao Cup Fourth Round

Arsenal eased into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a 4-2 victory away to Ipswich Town, with 16 year old Max Dowman stealing the headlines after scoring twice on his first appearance of the season.

Mikel Arteta made nine changes from the side that won at Sunderland at the weekend, handing Dowman a rare start, and the teenager repaid that faith inside seven minutes with a driving solo run through the middle before slotting into the bottom corner.

The visitors doubled their advantage soon after when Bruno Guimaraes won possession back and released Mikel Merino, who set up Noni Madueke to finish with a clinical first time volley in the sixteenth minute.

Arsenal were largely in control throughout the opening period, though top scorer Viktor Gyokeres struggled to get into the game, managing just six touches before the break.

Dowman then added his second and Arsenal’s third within two minutes of the restart, controlling a pass from Martin Zubimendi inside the box before calmly finishing to complete a memorable night for the young forward.

Merino got in on the scoring himself shortly after the hour mark, placing a low shot in off the far post to make it four and put the tie firmly beyond Ipswich’s reach.

The hosts, back in the Premier League this season after promotion from the Championship, did find some late consolation through Anis Mehmeti’s close range finish and a deflected effort from substitute Chuba Akpom deep into stoppage time, but the damage had long been done by that point.

The result sends Arsenal through to the fourth round, with the draw set to take place on Sky Sports following the Manchester United and Brighton fixture on Wednesday, and the next round of ties scheduled for the week beginning October 26.
