Vice President Kashim Shettima has described Nigeria’s admission into the International Energy Agency (IEA) as a strong endorsement of the economic and energy-sector reforms introduced by the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

According to the Vice President, the development demonstrates growing international confidence in Nigeria’s economy and its potential as a major player in the global energy market.

Shettima noted that the country’s inclusion in the IEA family will create new opportunities for investment, technical cooperation and policy collaboration in the energy sector. Nigeria became an IEA Association country in July 2026 following unanimous approval by the agency’s governing board.

He stated that ongoing reforms aimed at improving transparency, attracting investment and strengthening energy security have helped position Nigeria as a credible partner in global energy discussions.

The Vice President also emphasized that the government remains committed to creating an environment that supports sustainable growth, increased energy production and expanded access to energy services.

Industry observers believe Nigeria’s association with the IEA could enhance investor confidence and strengthen the country’s voice in shaping international energy policies.

Recent projections by IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol suggest that Nigeria could potentially double energy-sector investment within the next five years, driven by reforms, infrastructure improvements and stronger international cooperation.

Shettima maintained that the administration will continue pursuing policies designed to unlock opportunities across the oil, gas and renewable energy sectors while supporting broader economic development.

The Vice President expressed optimism that the benefits of these reforms would contribute to job creation, increased investment inflows and long-term economic growth for the country.
