The Canadian government has released guidance on categories of foreign nationals who may work in the country without a work permit.

The information outlines exemptions based on the type of work, activities or personal circumstances of the individual.

Being listed in an exempt category does not automatically allow entry into Canada or guarantee the exemption. Travellers must still meet the specific conditions that apply to their situation.

The exemptions cover about 25 groups. These include academics, business visitors, emergency workers, military personnel, athletes, students and religious leaders. Other categories cover examiners, public speakers, short-term researchers and certain highly skilled workers.

Business-related exemptions include convention organisers, while emergency and transport roles cover aviation inspectors, crew members and emergency service providers. Sports, media and arts professionals such as coaches, referees, news reporters and short-term performing artists are also included. Some students and recent graduates may qualify under certain conditions.

Even with a work permit exemption, most foreign nationals still need permission to enter Canada, such as a visitor visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization. The government advises anyone planning to work in Canada to check the official requirements carefully before travelling to confirm eligibility and needed documents.
