Yoruba Nollywood actress, Atinuke Remilekun Kareem has died after a long fight with breast cancer, her guild confirmed on Tuesday.

Owolabi Ajasa, president of the Ogun State chapter of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria, announced the death and thanked everyone who gave money, prayers or encouragement while she was in treatment. The support, he said, meant a great deal to her family and to colleagues. It was not enough to save her.

“We cannot question the Almighty God,” Ajasa wrote. “We can only submit to His will and pray that He grants her eternal rest and gives her family, colleagues and loved ones the strength to bear this painful loss.”

Kareem had gone public about four months earlier to ask for help with medical bills, a step many working actors still take when insurance and industry welfare cannot cover specialist care. Her passing adds to a hard stretch for Yoruba cinema: veteran Taiwo Hassan, known as Ogogo, died of cancer only days earlier.

She was known on screen as Atinuke Kareem, one of the familiar faces of Yoruba-language film rather than a household name across all of Nollywood. That makes the tributes now gathering feel closer to a family loss than a national spectacle. Funeral arrangements were still expected from her relatives.
