China has said it will take all necessary measures to protect its own rights and interests following the United States’ plans for tougher sanctions on Iran.

The response came after Washington outlined steps aimed at the “economic asphyxiation” of Tehran, including penalties on some entities linked to China.

Foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian told a regular news briefing on Tuesday that China firmly opposes what it calls illegal unilateral sanctions. He stressed that Beijing has repeatedly stated its position on the matter.

The United States has expanded secondary sanctions threats as part of efforts to cut Iran’s economic lifelines. Some of the measures target entities operating in or connected to China, which remains one of Iran’s key economic partners.

China’s statement signals its determination to defend its commercial and strategic interests amid rising pressure from Washington. Beijing has consistently rejected unilateral sanctions that it views as lacking international legal backing.

The development adds to ongoing tensions between the major powers over Iran’s economy and regional security. China is expected to continue balancing its ties with Tehran while responding to any impact on its own businesses and interests.
