CBN Mops Up Liquidity As OMO Auction Draws N4.93 Trillion In Bids
The Central Bank of Nigeria attracted a wave of investor demand at its latest Open Market Operations auction, pulling in N4.93 trillion in total subscriptions against a combined N600 billion on offer, according to auction results released on Thursday, August 13, 2026.
The offer was split evenly between a 103-day bill and a 138-day bill, with investors bidding aggressively to lock in yields around the 20 percent mark on the longer-dated paper.
The scale of oversubscription, more than eight times the amount on offer, reflects the persistent appetite among banks and institutional investors for high-yield central bank instruments even as the broader fixed income market shows signs of shifting.
The auction comes on the heels of an active week for the CBN’s liquidity management operations, following a Treasury Bills auction just a day earlier that similarly attracted overwhelming demand of N4.4 trillion against a N700 billion offer, with the apex bank opting to raise rather than lower its clearing rate on the one-year instrument.
Analysts have pointed to the CBN’s continued use of OMO auctions as a sterilisation tool rather than a pure funding exercise, with cumulative mop-ups running into tens of trillions of naira through 2026 alone. The strong demand for CBN paper comes even as market watchers increasingly anticipate the first interest rate cut of the year at the September Monetary Policy Committee meeting, a prospect that has pushed some investors to lock in current elevated yields before any downward adjustment takes hold.
