Group Sues Federal Government, Edo Governor Over Alleged Threats to Opposition Candidate’s Safety

Lawyers under the Obidient Lawyers Forum, alongside an incorporated civil rights organization, have instituted a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja against President Bola Tinubu, the Attorney-General of the Federation, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, and heads of three security agencies over alleged threats to the life of 2027 presidential candidate Peter Obi.

The plaintiffs filed the fundamental rights enforcement suit following recent public statements, including a live broadcast where Obi expressed concerns over his personal safety ahead of the 2027 election, as well as alleged restrictive threats from Governor Okpebholo warning Obi against entering Edo State without clearance.

In their affidavit, the lawyers argued that every Nigerian citizen possesses the unalienable right to life, freedom of movement, and political association across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory without facing psychological intimidation, harassment, or threats of political violence.

The lawsuit seeks judicial orders directing President Tinubu and heads of the Police, DSS, and NSCDC to immediately deploy maximum security protection and physical intelligence details for Obi and all other presidential candidates to guarantee their safety throughout the electoral process.
