A United States Congressman, John James, has again called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra.

The Michigan lawmaker made the appeal on the floor of the House of Representatives, linking Kanu’s detention to broader concerns about violence against Christians in Nigeria.

James referenced a resolution he introduced earlier this year urging Nigeria to ensure Kanu’s legal proceedings comply with the country’s constitution and international human rights standards.

He described Nigeria as one of the most dangerous places for Christians and accused the government of ignoring or enabling attacks by Islamist groups.

The congressman argued that Kanu was convicted in what he called a flawed trial for speaking out against the killings. He urged his colleagues to support the resolution or push for Kanu’s unconditional release.

James warned that the US could not continue providing billions in aid to Nigeria while such issues persist. He stressed America’s moral duty to ensure Christians in Nigeria can worship freely without fear.

Kanu has been in custody since his 2021 arrest in Kenya. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on terrorism charges last year. The resolution is still before the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. The call adds to international pressure on the Nigerian government regarding Kanu’s case.
