Transparently Investigate Mary Habila’s Death, Women Groups Urges Tinubu

The Nigerian Women International Alliance has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to set up an independent, transparent, and credible investigation into the death of physiotherapist Mary Habila.

The group, in an open letter signed by its President, Mrs Omolara Abike and other officials, described the incident as one that has generated significant public concern across the country.

They stressed the need for a process that can restore public confidence and demonstrate commitment to accountability.

The alliance noted that while no one should be presumed guilty before proper investigations are concluded, the seriousness of the matter requires thorough scrutiny.

NWIA emphasised that its call is not meant to indict any individual but to uphold due process and institutional integrity. The group said every Nigerian is entitled to the constitutional presumption of innocence and protection of due process.

The organisation observed that public accountability strengthens democratic institutions and builds citizens’ trust in government. According to NWIA, transparent investigations into cases involving public officers serve the interest of both those under investigation and the wider public.

The alliance expressed concern that failure to conduct an open probe could erode confidence in state institutions and discourage victims from coming forward.

The death of the young physiotherapist has sparked national conversations about transparency in handling cases involving public officials. The group highlighted that the higher the public office, the greater the obligation to submit to transparent scrutiny. NWIA said such investigations are important for Nigeria’s image among international partners and investors.

The alliance called on the president to ensure the investigation is conducted in a manner that upholds the rule of law and justice. They believe a credible probe will help address the concerns raised by many Nigerians and promote fairness in the system.

The statement reflects growing demands for accountability in high-profile cases across the country.
