Nigeria Needs Competent and Compassionate Leadership, Says Peter Obi
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said Nigeria requires competent, accountable, and compassionate leadership to unlock its vast human and natural resources.
Obi made the statement in a post on his official X handle after participating in a high-level roundtable discussion in Berlin, Germany. The event, organised by the European Council on Foreign Relations, focused on Nigeria’s democratic journey beyond 2027 and strategies for economic growth.
Obi reiterated his belief that Nigeria has all the resources needed to become a prosperous and globally competitive nation. He stressed that what is missing is leadership that prioritises investment in people, education, healthcare, productive enterprise, the rule of law, and strong institutions.
The former Anambra State governor said good governance is the key to moving the country from consumption to production and from poverty to prosperity.
During the discussions, Obi highlighted the importance of fiscal responsibility and productive partnerships with the international community. He expressed appreciation for the strong interest shown by participants in Nigeria’s future and the role it can play in the global community. Obi described such engagements as vital for strengthening international cooperation and building lasting partnerships.
The roundtable brought together policymakers, diplomats, development experts, business leaders, and members of the international media.
Obi thanked the European Council on Foreign Relations for inviting him to the event. He said Nigeria’s future can be bright if deliberate choices are made to embrace good governance and sustainable development.
Obi’s comments have sparked conversations about the kind of leadership needed to move the country forward. Many Nigerians continue to look for leaders who can address the nation’s challenges with competence and compassion. The former vice presidential candidate remains a vocal advocate for better governance and economic reforms aimed at improving the lives of ordinary citizens.
