Ogun Joins League of Oil Producing States Following eBay Island Exploration
The Ogun State Government has commenced active oil exploration activities on Eba Island, following the discovery of crude oil in the area.
Governor Dapo Abiodun disclosed the development in a video announcement, describing it as a major milestone for the state’s coastal communities in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area.
According to the governor, the exploration activities mark a significant step toward unlocking economic opportunities for residents of Eba and surrounding communities, with expectations of job creation, infrastructure development, and stronger federal investment as drilling progresses.
Ogun State has maintained that Eba Island falls squarely within its territory, citing boundary records and federal due diligence carried out by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s approval for commercial drilling.
It is worth noting, however, that ownership of the island has been a point of contention with neighbouring Ondo State, whose communities have laid competing claims to the location.
Despite the disagreement over territorial boundaries, exploration activities appear to be moving forward, with Ogun State authorities pressing ahead and touting the development as a breakthrough for the coastal region.
Residents and stakeholders have expressed excitement over the discovery, viewing it as a long-awaited opportunity for economic transformation, with further updates on the scale and timeline of operations expected in the coming weeks.
