South Africa Wins Approval for Armoured Vehicle Supply to Ukraine

South Africa-based defence and aerospace manufacturer Paramount Group has moved deeper into Ukraine’s defence market after a Ukrainian-configured armoured vehicle linked to its Mbombe 4 platform was approved for use by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Paramount Industries Innovation Systems Greece, the European arm of the Midrand-headquartered defence group founded by South African entrepreneur Ivor Ichikowitz, said Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence had formally codified and approved the MAC OWL, or Sova, armoured vehicle for military service.

The approval marks the latest step in Paramount’s Ukraine push, coming months after Business Insider Africa reported in February that the South African company was seeking to establish a presence in Ukraine’s rapidly growing armoured vehicle market.

Crucially, the expansion is being spearheaded by Paramount Greece, the company’s European subsidiary operating through Paramount Industries Greece S.A., a structure that positions the South African-founded group within European and NATO-linked defence markets.

According to Ukrainian defence outlet Oboronka, Paramount Greece earlier this year showcased a locally adapted Mbombe 4 vehicle to Ukrainian defence stakeholders, marking one of the company’s most direct engagements with a conflict-zone customer in Europe. That vehicle has evolved into the MAC OWL, a Ukrainian-configured variant of Paramount’s Mbombe 4 Infantry Combat Vehicle, developed with Ukraine’s MAC HUB for high-threat environments.

The name “Mbombe” honours a Zulu warrior and reflects the vehicle family’s focus on protection and durability. Since its launch in 2019, the Mbombe 4 has attracted orders from several countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, the United Arab Emirates, Togo and India, where an Indian variant is produced under licence by Bharat Forge as the Kalyani M4.

According to the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, the MAC OWL offers the highest levels of protection against mines and ambushes among domestically produced armoured vehicles and features the thickest side armour in its category. The vehicle is certified to withstand blasts of up to 10kg TNT equivalent under STANAG 4569 standards. Its armoured crew compartment is designed to protect soldiers against battlefield threats.

The approval follows testing shaped by lessons from the Russia-Ukraine war, where mines, improvised explosive devices, artillery fragments and FPV drones have become major threats to troops and vehicles.

MAC HUB Director Oleksandr Dubyna said the vehicle was developed with crew protection as the main priority.

“We drew on the very best of global expertise in the design and production of armoured vehicles and took into account the unique realities of the war being fought in Ukraine. Our primary mission was to protect the lives of the MAC OWL armoured vehicle’s crew. To achieve that, we selected only the most reliable, combat-proven components, integrated the latest technologies, and spent countless hours refining every detail.”

Paramount Greece said the approval by Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence was a major endorsement of the vehicle’s battlefield readiness.

“The codification and approval of the MAC OWL by the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine represents an extraordinary endorsement of the vehicle’s design, protection and operational effectiveness. There can be few more demanding proving grounds for military equipment than the battlefields of Ukraine. To be recognised by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence as the best protected locally produced armoured vehicle in the country is a remarkable achievement for both MAC HUB and Paramount Greece.”

Paramount Group was founded in South Africa in 1994 with “the bold goal of helping African governments better protect their countries” and has since grown into a global defence and aerospace company supplying armoured vehicles, aircraft, naval systems and defence technologies. The company is regarded as Africa’s largest privately owned defence and aerospace business, with operations serving sovereign governments across five continents.
