Kenneth Okonkwo Slammed with N5bn Defamation Suit Over NDC Bribery Allegations
A fresh legal crisis has hit prominent actor, lawyer, and politician Kenneth Okonkwo, following a 5 billion naira defamation lawsuit filed against him over explosive bribery allegations leveled against aspirants of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The lawsuit adds a contentious layer of legal and political friction to the opposition camp as parties consolidate structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The multi-billion naira suit was instituted by aggrieved NDC political aspirants who claim that Okonkwo’s recent public statements maliciously targeted their integrity. The controversy stems from a series of media appearances and online commentary where Okonkwo allegedly accused certain foundational aspirants within the newly formed opposition alliance of systemic financial inducement and bribery to secure high-ranking slots and control of the party’s regional structures.
The plaintiffs maintain that the actor-turned-politician’s assertions were a calculated attempt to damage their reputations, diminish their standing before the voting public, and orchestrate internal chaos within the party. They argue that Okonkwo offered no verifiable evidence to substantiate his heavy claims, which have now subjected them to intense public ridicule and political vulnerability.
Through their legal representatives, the NDC aspirants are seeking 5 billion naira in general and exemplary damages for defamation. In addition to the financial compensation, the lawsuit is demanding a formal, unconditional retraction of the bribery claims, to be published across major national dailies and broadcast networks, alongside a perpetual injunction restraining Okonkwo from making further defamatory statements against the aspirants.
Okonkwo, a former spokesperson for the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential campaign who has remained highly vocal about internal opposition dynamics, has yet to issue an official statement regarding the newly filed writ of summons. Legal observers note that this high-stakes suit could force a complex legal showdown, putting a spotlight on the boundaries of political commentary, whistleblowing, and proof of corruption within Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
