Davido Uses FIFA World Cup Concert to Highlight Plight of Abducted Oyo Pupils, Teachers
Nigerian music star, Davido used his appearance at the FIFA World Cup countdown concert on Wednesday to draw global attention to the plight of pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, calling on authorities to intensify efforts to secure their release.
The singer, whose real name is David Adeleke, turned his highly anticipated performance into an advocacy platform by highlighting concerns over insecurity in Nigeria and urging swift government intervention for those still being held captive.
Ahead of his performance, Davido appeared in a customised black leather jacket designed to honour the victims of the abduction. The outfit featured green circular buttons bearing the names of the affected pupils and teachers.
The names of those who remain in captivity were inscribed in white lettering, while those of victims who reportedly lost their lives during the incident were marked in red. He paired the jacket with a white T-shirt emblazoned with the word “NIGERIA,” while the message “BRING THEM HOME” was displayed prominently on the back of the jacket.
In remarks delivered shortly before taking the stage, Davido expressed sympathy for the families affected by the incident and voiced concern over the pace of rescue efforts.
He offered prayers for both the families of those abducted and those who lost their lives, while calling on federal and state authorities to accelerate actions aimed at securing the victims’ freedom.
The concert formed part of activities marking the countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Davido was one of the headline performers at the official countdown event in the United States, further reinforcing his position as a leading global representative of African music.
His appearance comes after the announcement that he will feature alongside fellow Nigerian artistes Burna Boy, Rema and Ayra Starr on the official soundtrack album for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
