Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has announced plans to close some Internally Displaced Persons camps following improved security in the state. He said many displaced residents have voluntarily returned home to resume farming.

The governor made the disclosure during a media chat with the Renewed Hope Ambassadors Presidential Media Team. He noted that enhanced security, supported by Federal Government intervention, had created relative peace across several communities.

Alia recalled that 15 IDP camps were earlier established after attacks and displacement. He explained that the declining number of occupants in the camps was encouraging, as many returnees were not only farming but also rebuilding their homes.

The state government is working with international partners, including the United Nations and the International Organisation for Migration, to ensure sustainable solutions. The goal is to create conditions that allow returnees to remain safely in their communities rather than face repeated displacement.

Alia also highlighted progress in road infrastructure, education, and healthcare, including the recruitment of thousands of teachers and upgrades to primary healthcare facilities.

He expressed optimism that sustained security efforts would enable residents to rebuild their livelihoods and support the state’s agricultural economy.
